da gbg bet: Peter le Grange08-Dec-2002Northerns B ended the first day of the UCB Bowl match at Newlands at a slight advantage after dismissing the home team for 246, of which they had knocked off 23 by close of play.Jonno McLean elected to bat first on a typically good Newlands wicket. After the early loss of Derrin Bessage, Andrew Puttick batted sublimely. Normally known for his stoic defence, the left-hander lashed five boundaries in going to 23 off just 16 balls. He then suffered a slump which was to typify the WP B effort, scoring just a single off the next twenty balls he faced. In this time, he was dropped twice and was caught off a no-ball. Mandla Mashinbye, the culprit in one of the dropped chances and the no-ball, was eventually rewarded with his wicket as he edged to skipper James Mokonyama in the slips.Rashaad Magiet faced 149 balls for his 55, which was ultimately to be the top score of the day. McLean also batted with unusual patience, but the home side lost their way against the part-time spinners Maurice Aronstam and Johan Myburgh as five wickets tumbled for 15 in the space of eleven overs.Quinton Friend restored some balance to the match as he struck twice in his second over to dismiss Aronstam and Mokonyama. He could have had a hat-trick as Myburgh appeared to edge into the slips, but umpire Westraadt ruled that the ball had been played into the ground. Myburgh and Aldin Smith survived the remaining overs without any further scares. By close of play, the visitors had reduced the deficit to 223 runs with eight wickets in hand.
