Stats highlights from the ODI between South Africa and England in Johannesburg where Chris Morris pulled off a heist.

Morris’ fifty is only the second such fifty for South Africa. Before this, Lance Klusener had made an unbeaten 52 against Australia at the same venue in 2000. Overall, Morris’ 62 is the sixth-highest score by a batsman batting at No. 8 or lower in successful chases.2014 The last time the ninth and tenth wickets added 50 or more runs in a successful chase in an ODI between Full-Member teams. Australia had pulled off a stunning win, also against England, when they managed to chase down a target of 302 from 244 for 9. Overall, South Africa’s innings was the 16th instance when a team’s ninth and tenth wickets contributed 50-plus runs in a successful chase.8 ODI hundreds by Joe Root in only 63 innings; Root’s eight centuries are already the joint-third highest by an England batsman; Graham Gooch also made eight hundreds. Only Marcus Trescothick (12) and Kevin Pietersen (9) have made more hundreds in ODIs. Root has scored 2545 runs at an average of 44.64, the second-highest average by any England batsman with at least 1000 ODI runs. Jonathan Trott tops the list with 2819 runs at 51.25.96.50 Imran Tahir’s bowling average in this series prior to the fourth match. He had taken just two wickets and had conceded 193 runs from 28 overs at economy of 6.89. In this match though, Tahir was the impact bowler with returns of 3 for 46. His wickets of Alex Hales, Eoin Morgan and Ben Stokes in a span of seven balls reduced England from 87 for 1 to 97 for 4.7 Number of fifty-plus scores by England’s top three in this series – the most in any bilateral series for them. While Root has made two hundreds and a fifty, Hales has made four fifties in as many matches. Overall, there have been only three instances when England’s top three have made more than seven fifty-plus scores in a series, all in World Cups.2 Instances when an England batsman has hit four 50-plus scores in a bilateral series before Alex Hales. Eoin Morgan made one hundred and three fifties in a series against New Zealand last year. Before that, Kevin Pietersen had made three hundreds and one fifty in a series in South Africa in 2004-05. Hales is the first England opener to do so in a bilateral series.4 Previous instances of South Africa winning an ODI with a margin of one wicket before this match. Their last victory was against New Zealand in Potchefstroom, chasing a target of 261.9 Runs scored by England’s middle order (No.4 to No. 7), this equals the second lowest by England’s middle order in an ODI. The only previous instance when four batsmen in England’s middle order were dismissed for a lower aggregate was in 1980 when they managed just eight runs in an ODI against Australia at the SCG.154 Runs added by England’s last four wickets – their fourth highest in an ODI. The highest these wickets have added for England in an ODI are the 206 runs against New Zealand at Edgbaston last year.21 Runs added by England for their third to sixth wicket. England collapsed from 87 for 2 to 108 for 6 in their innings. This is the joint-second lowest aggregate added by England in an ODI for these wickets after the first two wickets had added 50 or more runs. The only instance when England managed fewer runs for these wickets was against New Zealand in 1978, when they collapsed from 178 for 2 to 198 for 6. On another occasion, England lost four quick wickets for 21 runs, from 134 for 2 to 155 for 6 against India chasing a target of 272 in Kolkata in 2011. This is also the joint-fourth lowest runs scored between England’s third and sixth wicket in an ODI.1 South Africa’s innings in this match is the first instance in an ODI when batsmen between No. 3 and No. 6 were dismissed scoring between 30 and 39. It was also the first instance when six of the top seven batsmen were dismissed between 20 and 39.
